I am often asked How I Chalk Painted Wood Floors so today I want to share the details. It’s a great product as you will see, but there is something you should know. This is one of the best things I have done to a floor, it has lasted years and is still keeping up! Chalk Paint your laminate floors, linoleum floors, even chalk paint your concrete floors. There are so many options when it comes to chalk painting your floors. At the bottom of this post I will share many questions and answers asked about chalk painting floors.
How I Chalk Painted Wood Floors
Chalk painting is so easy that I left this project up to our 15 year old daughter Alea. She used Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Dried Sage. What’s great is that you can buy it on Amazon. For those that are new to me. I have been painting since I was a child. Let’s just say that I have used many types of paint and many brands. My current chalk paint that I use is Dixie Belle. It’s quick and easy to order off Amazon and it’s a great product. Plus the color selection is really pretty. Instead of a solid color, you can white wash your floors. Using a dry brush, lightly paint over the surface.
Do you have to sand your floors first?
Are you wondering if you should sand your floors before painting? This is How I Chalk Painted Wood Floors. I did sand the floors first. You don’t need to sand a lot, but you want to rough it up for better adhesion. I know they say you don’t have to sand before chalk painting but I always do for long term results and peace of mind.
The painting part is easy with the right paint brush. You can find my favorite paint brush. The best part is that it’s under $10 and washes out beautifully even when using chalk paint. Alea applied two coats of chalk paint and then waxed the floor with Annie Sloan clear wax. When you purchase affiliate links the small commission I make helps keep my blog running. Painting wood floors with chalk paint is a great decision! It can really change the look of a room without buying new flooring.
How I Chalk Painted Wood Floors
Here is what you need to know with Chalk Painted Wood Floors. When you wax the floors, it will leave marks on the floor when you move the bed. Now for most people they wouldn’t care as these are clear marks but for Alea, she doesn’t like it. So I would recommend a Polycrylic sealer. It is really smelly, so do this on a day that you can open the windows. I would also wear a Paint Mask for personal protection. This is something I use everyday when I paint. I have recently painted my plank flooring in my new office. But I will share a tutorial on how I made the plank flooring.
If you are still unsure about chalk paint and want to get to know it better, I have an ebook perfect for you. It tells you all of the basics of chalk painting, as well as brands I love and ones you want to stay away from.
How to clean chalk painted wood floors?
It would depend if the wood has a finish on it. My floors have the polyacrylic sealer so there is no way to get the paint off unless you sand them. I would just mop them with soap and water and if you have used wax or sealer you should be fine. If you want to steam clean I would try a corner area and see what happens as you could always touch up the paint there if it does come off.
How to distress chalk paint kitchen floors?
So begin by prepping and painting as you would normally. Then sand down the areas you want distressed. I would personally seal kitchen floors with a polyacrylic, as this is a well used place and will last longer that way.
How to seal bathroom floors?
To seal bathroom floors I would do a couple layers of polycrylic. This will make for a long lasting sealed floor.
How much chalk paint to use for floors?
This room is 8×10 and we used 2 quarts of paint for a couple coats. A quart of Dixie Belle Chalk Paint covers about 150 sq ft.
Can you paint half the room at a time?
Yes. That’s what we did for this room.
How much polycrylic sealer do you use?
I personally didn’t use polycrylic on this floor. But a quart of polycrylic covers about 125 sq ft.
Can I use a roller instead of a brush?
Yes, if your space is big enough a roller will work great.
How to chalk paint laminate floors?
It is the same process as wood floors. I would make sure to sand laminate to rough up the surface for better adhesion. Once you have lightly sanded the surface and cleaned it just chalk paint as you would the floors. You can then also use a sealer as well. Here is a link about chalk paint laminate floors to get a more detailed version.
How to chalk paint concrete floors?
Simply clean your surface and then begin to paint. Let the coats dry fully until applying the next coat. If your floors have been painted or are coated with something, I would give them a light sanding. If you want to read more about chalk painting concrete floors I will share a tutorial.

On the blog I have many other tutorials that will help you on painting tips and styles. Have you tried milk paint? It is super cool, I will share a tutorial on how I milk painted some furniture. Another fun one, is using a dark wax after chalk painting. It turns out super cool and antiqued looking.
Can you use a polyurethane on top of the chalk paint I know that poly acrylic can have a milky look with black. I plan on paint the floor black.
Yes you can
I love, love, love this!! The floors turned out so great! We recently got a floor refinishing instead of floor painting since we are planning on selling our home soon. I would love to try chalk painted floors at some point though!
I would like to paint my old bedroom wood floors and I prefer not to sand to avoid old lead based varnish. It is very worn, not a glossy varnish. Do you think I can skip saniding? What lwould be the advantage of using Milk Paint.
Your bedroom floor is beautiful, I wish I could achieve that.
Valente,
Ya I would skip sanding. I don’t use milk paint myself but I use fusion mineral, it has a sealer in it for a more glossy look. Chalk Paint Dixie bell works as well.
Can this be used on hardwood flooring on a staircase? I would love to try it on the stairs first before I move into the whole 2nd floor!
Absolutely! I painted our upstairs floors with this and loved it!
Hello! I’m restoring an older house. The previous tenants had pets that did a number on the carpet and some seeped to the painted white wood footing underneath. I’m look to seal the floors with kilnz first and then use the chalk paint on top of that. Do you think that would work?
Yes that will work perfectly!
Love this post. Would a a chalk paint take to a solid maple floor also?
Yes you can chalk paint maple as well!

Hello,
Here is a link. I would treat is like laminate floors and give it a light sanding for adhesion. And then wipe clean and chalk paint.

Hi Rhonda
We’re about to paint our wooden floors. It’s. a huge area, approx 60 sq metres which includes the dining room, lounge and entranceway. All of them get relatively high traffic. Would you recommend using a specific floor paint such as Mylands rather than chalk paint for an area this large and high trafficked?
Thanks!
I myself would stick with chalk paint I think it adheres really well without that shine.
Hope that helps
Rhonda
Does the Polly yellow over time?
Hello Patty,
The one I have linked does not yellow, since it is a water base.
This room looks amazing! Did you have to prime the hardwood floor before you started painting?
Thx! No I didn’t, I just gave it a quick sanding and then applied my paint.
Embarrassed to ask, but we have 3 rescue dogs and we have doggie accidents. The guy who refinished our hardwood 8 years ago did a horrible job and now the wood is bare. Wondering if this finish would hold up to dog urine?
Good question. It would depend on the sealer you use. I would talk to a miller paint to see what they recommend for a clear finish for dogs
How would you clean the painted floors. Not remove the paint…just clean it?
I just lightly mop the floors, as usual. I know there is a wood floor cleaner. I try not to have a lot of cleaner on my floors because the residue can build up.
I hope that helps.
Thanks for sharing this. It really did turn out beautifully. Would I need to wax and seal or just one or the other after paint? I want it to be the most durable as possible. Thanks!
I personally waxed mine, but a clear polyacrylic may last longer. That’s what I use on the tops of my tables and dressers.
Beautiful! I’m curious, if I wanted a weathered beach-ier look, could I paint the boards gray first, then go over it with a more thinned out, white chalk paint? I would think a gray chalk paint would look a little too even for that weathered beach look. What do you think?
Ya! That’s the best way to get that look. It’s really pretty!! Message me if you have any questions.
