Supplies:
- Vases
- Matte Spray Paint
- Dixie Belle Mud
- Paint Brush or Rag
Step 1: Spray Painting Aged Pots
To get this high end look is so easy! Start by grabbing the vase or pots you are going to paint. I like to spray paint in a well ventilated are, outside works great on a nice day. I used a chalk spray paint and sprayed all my pots with this base charcoal color. Another fun paint project is painting with baking soda!

Step 2: Adding mud to the vase
Time for the mud, well not real mud. Some people are mixing dirt with water to create mud, but you can get really sandy or chunky bits. I use Dixie Belles “mud.” It is a textured paste, but it doesn’t give you really big or inconsistent chunks. This style looks great for a modern farmhouse look.
Step 3: How to apply the mud
I used a rag to spread around the mud, but you can also use a paint brush. You will simply just start rubbing it all over the pot. Be sure to get it thicker in areas where you want the chunky look. If you want to try a different technique we have a tutorial on how to make white wax here.
I then really rubbed off the spots I didn’t want the dirt on, so some of the black could show through.
After I rubbed off the desired amount of mud, I let it sit overnight to dry. If there were still some spots that had too much much I took a dry paper towel and rubbed it off. If there is not enough mud to your liking, simply repeat the process.
We also added these mud vases to our daughters updated bedroom. Thanks for stopping by and be sure to check out our Instagram for all the behind the scenes at Hallstrom Home.
So love this but I’d I wanted to do it for planters outside would it just get ruined when it rained or I sprayed the flowers…sorry silly question I’m sure
It should work. I would just spray a clear polycrylic over top. I’ll. link some here for you.

Embarrassing question…do you paint inside the vase too?
I just paint the inside where you can sorta see in so towards the top. I don’t paint the entire inside.
I love this! So beautiful and I can’t wait to try it! This question might be silly but did you wait for the paint to dry before applying the mud? Thank you!
Thank you! Yes wait till the paint is fully dry then apply the mud.
Hi, LOVE this! What color mud is that? Brown? Thanks!
Thank you! We use brown mud by Dixie Belle!
What a great diy! I need to try this out
It’s a lot of fun!
Hi,
I love the the effect. Do you protect the outside of the pot after the final layer?
Also, what material are the original pots?
Thanks
If this is going to be outdoors you could spray it with a non yellowing polycyrlic. But you don’t have to if it’s indoors. I have been painting ceramic, but you can get this look with most any materials.
